The temples of Chennai reflect the splendid culture. These temples of really ancient origin exhibit intricate carvings and sculptures bearing testimony to the craftsmanship and creativity of the artisan sculptors and artists of India. Of the several temples that line southern metropolis of Chennai, the Kalikambal Temple in Chennai in the heart of the city stands out for its tradition of festivals. This temple attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year.

The presiding deity in this Kalikambal Temple in Chennai is Goddess Kalikambal who is believed to be one of the twelve manifestations of Goddess Kamatchi of Kanchipuram. The Goddess is said to be facing west which is a rather rare sight. Originally located in Madras Kuppam where Fort St. George in Chennai was constructed, this temple was helped by the English traders to relocate at Chennakuppam which is again the present George Town. The people are known to have worshipped this Goddess as their family deity.

The 16 stone pillared hall at the center is carved with 64 deities. One special attraction of Kalikambal Temple in Chennai is the carved stone pillar in the shape of Sri Anjaneyar that is facing the west. The temple was visited by the great Maratha Emperor Chatrapati Shivaji who stopped in the premises to offer his prayers to the lord. It is said that the visibility of the temple has grown in the last two decades. It is also believed that a fierce or "ugra form" of the Goddess was held in worship earlier and that this form was replaced with the "Shanta Swaroopa" or demure form of Kamakshi along with a Meru in the recent past. This also adds on to make the Kalikambal Temple in Chennai one of the most famous tourist attractions in Chennai. The Kinniter- a chariot lined with metal cymbals is unique to this temple and it also attracts large crowds.
