The Senate House in Chennai is one of the major tourist attractions in Chennai. It was built under the directions of the skilled architect of the 19th century Robert Fellowes Chisholm. Dignitaries were greeted by firing salvoes from the artillery park of the Nawab where the Senate House in Chennai was built. It was in 1869 that the foundation stone was laid down and was completed in 1873. The Senate House in Chennai comprises of a central hall with corridors on the ground floor and stand on 6 firm pillars on either side. Exquisitely shaped and vibrantly coloured domes heap each corner where there are four sky touching towers and give a dazzling look. Of the 6 porch, 2 are on the Eastern side and 2 on the western side of the building. The main entry to the building is provided on the northern side and has an entry porch. The roof here is made of brick work and supported on brick pillars. This monument which is one of the most wanted tourist attractions in Chennai, has a convocation hall and beautiful porticos and a parapet that surrounds it.

Senate House in Chennai also has halls for meetings and a library etc. The Senate House in Chennai initially housed offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar and the University Departments of study and research. The main hall here was used for convocations. The building held many functions. Apart from convocations the hall was used as the meeting place of the first elected Madras Legislative Assembly when it was convened in 1937.
