The Snake Park

A major and somewhat creepy, i.e. if you don’t like reptiles specially snakes, Tourist Attractions in Chennai is the Snake Park located in one of the urban centres of Chennai city called Adyar. Situated next to the Guindy National Park and founded by the wildlife conservationist Romulus Whitaker, it was established in the year 1972, the Madras Snake Park Trust (MSPT) has been home to a wide range of snakes, from the deadly King Cobra, Adders, Pythons, Vipers and other types of reptiles. People come to this Snake Park and especially children enjoy their tour the most.

This famous snake breeding park lies in the Guindy area of the city suburb and accessibility to the park is provided by a small road linked to Sardar Vallabhai Patel Road. With the intention of preserving the endangered reptile species in the sub continent, the Snake Park features the breeding and captive place of many Indian snake species. After the Snake Park secured the recognition of a Medium Zoo from the Central Zoo Authority in the year 1995, it started housing a number of other snake species, lizards, crocodiles and even turtles.

You will get to see a large range of snakes and other small animals and there is even a LIVE show, where trained personnel play and ‘interact’ with a variety of snakes, including cobras and vipers, and seek to quell mythical fears and superstitions about snakes. 30 species of Indian snakes breed here like the King Cobra, Indian Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Adders and Vipers etc. The Snake Park also breeds species of various lizards, crocodiles and turtles besides housing them. In addition the Snake Park also has a library and a museum on the property. The museum also has many preserved specimens of reptiles and amphibians. The Snake Park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, many of which are gradually becoming extinct. The Snake Park is open to tourists and visitors on all week days except on Tuesday. The visiting hours are from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
